In recent years, an increasing number of research into dental erosion is observed. A variety of methodological approaches have been used to determine the effects of acids on dental mineralized tissues. Based on these studies, the effectiveness of different antierosive agents are often evaluated and clinical recommendations for prevention are formulated. The aim of the article is to critically review the methods that are used to quantitatively and qualitatively assess erosive lesions. Along with traditional, several novel and less frequently used approaches are also discussed. Particular emphasis was placed on limitations and applicability of each method with regard to stage of the lesion, type of the tissue (enamel, dentin), type of the data to be obtained (quantitative, qualitative), specimen preparation requirements, possibility for repeated measurements, character of the experiment (in vitro, in situ, in vivo). The information gathered in this review could aid to design a research into dental erosion as well as to reach a reliable results.

Key words: dental erosion, enamel, dentine, assessment methods, measurement.
