Fraza do cytowania: Sypniewska‑Kawka D., Paszyńska E. The possibilities of using nanotechnology in dentistry. Dental Forum. 2016;XLIV(2):53–58. DOI: https://doi.org/10.20883/df.2016.25.

Nanotechnology deals with the production of components with dimensions or tolerances in the range of 0.1–100 nm, applying them by building nanosystems as well as increased miniaturization. In recent decades, the development of this branch of science has increased the use of nanoparticles in various fields of activity including dentistry. The aim of the study is to discuss the importance of nanotechnology in dentistry as well as its impact on diagnosis, prevention and action. The paper discribes the role of nanotechnology in the diagnosis of oral cancer, the detection of inflammatory factors in periodontal disease, and the use of nanoparticles in the preparations used for prophylaxis and dental materials. Nanostomatology seems to be the future of dentistry; the molecular nanoscale opens the door to previously unavailable methods, even of AFM detection. Nanoparticles are carriers that may reach previously inaccessible structures. The use of nanoparticles in composite materials and ceramics has improved their durability, aesthetics and anti bacterial properties.

Key words: nanotechnology, nanoparticles, dental materials, dentistry.
