Satisfaction with the orthodontic treatment influenced by patient‑orthodontist’s communication

Introduction. The treatment with fixed appliances may decrease an average quality of life at the beginning of the therapy. Effective doctor‑patient communication allows to avoid misunderstandings resulting from the lack of knowledge of possible complications during orthodontic treatment. Aim. The aim of the study is to determine the importance of doctor‑patient communication in the assessment of the results of orthodontic treatment. Material and Methods. The study used a proprietary questionnaire consisting of 19 questions, of which 5 related to the doctor‑patient communication. The criterion for participation in the study was completed orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances or aligners. The questionnaire was completed by 299 respondents, of which 293 were considered important. The data was analyzed statistically. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results. A statistically significant correlation was obtained between patient satisfaction and communication with the orthodontist, presentation of the treatment plan by the orthodontist and understanding of the treatment plan by the patient. The majority of 87.6% respondents stated that they would like to receive reliable information about the procedures performed by the orthodontist at each visit.
