DOI: https://doi.org/10.20883/df.2021.14. Neurodegenerative diseases not only lead to impaired motor and cognitive functions, but also affect oral health. There is ample evidence to link periodontitis with Alzheimer's disease. Chronic inflammation in periodontium can influence the initiation of inflammatory changes in the nervous system. Mental and motor disorders occurring in these diseases, especially in advanced stages, worsen hygiene, and thus increase the risk of caries and periodontal disease. In this group of patients, disorders in the temporomandibular joint and xerostomia may also be more common.
Key words: neurodegenerative diseases, periodontitis, xerostomia.
