Introduction. Taste is a complex sensory value and at the same time a result of certain actions. Responsible for these functions are receptors of the tongue and palate. Diet, lesions in the mouth and the use of dentures affect the sense of taste. Dentures restore chewing ability and improve the pronunciation and aesthetics. The plate of upper prosthesis must cover the tubers and alveolus of the jaw as well as the hard palate, which constitutes an extensive area. Aim. The aim of our study was to compare the perception of flavors among patients with a complete upper denture who use adhesive creams and those who do not use them at all. Material and methods. The subjects were patients reporting to Prosthodontics Clinic in Bytom. Dental examinations and detailed interviews were conducted. The experiment was based on a method developed by the authors whereby the patient's oral cavity is rinsed with solutions equivalent to sweet, salty, acidic and bitter flavors of successively increasing concentrations. Further tests were performed without dentures in the oral cavity, with dentures presents and when prostheses were used with an adhesive material. Results and conclusions. Experiment showed wide variations in taste perception. The patients responded differently to the particular solutions and flavors depending on the length of prosthesis use and the application of adhesive creams. Using dentures and denture adhesives improves their retention in the mouth, but also affects taste perception.

Key words: taste, dysgeusia, complete denture, adhesive materials.
